MOBILE, Ala. (April 3, 2014– University of South Alabama communication students are holding “Pizza for
McKemie” at Picklefish Pizzeria on April 19 at 3 p.m. for McKemie Place, Mobile’s only homeless shelter
for single women.
"Holding this benefit is a small way for us to assist women in our community who have lost a job, been
in an abusive relationship or have nowhere else to turn,” said Whitney Patterson, senior public relations
major. “After learning about what these brave women endure, we immediately saw an opportunity to
help the shelter build awareness and receive supplies they need.”
McKemie Place is the only overnight shelter for single, homeless women in all of Mobile, Washington
and Baldwin Counties. They are a safe haven with a 65-bed capacity and have been filled over 15,000
times since the first night they opened their doors.
The benefit is featuring food, door prizes, a silent auction and live music by Danny Spiro and the
Wingmen, a Mobile-bred band, for a $5 cover charge. Additionally, guests can purchase McKemie Place
t-shirts for $10. All proceeds benefit McKemie Place.
CP+B Squared Agency formed to complete a service learning project for a charity in conjunction
with Protect America's “Pay It Forward Challenge” and its partnership with the USA Department of
Communication. Students are responsible for creating their own communication agencies and designing
a strategic communication plan for a charity of their choice. The “Pay It Forward Challenge” is an
opportunity for students to put their education into real world practice.
"Participating in the ‘Pay It Forward Challenge’ has given us more than an experience, but has created a
relationship with an organization near and dear to our hearts,” said Carson Bates, CP+B Squared Agency
member and senior advertising major.
If you would like to participate or learn more about McKemie Place, contact Destinee Bliss, CP+B
